Migration vs Modernization
Migration changes where software runs. Modernization changes how the business operates. Leaders need to know which outcome they are funding.
The distinction matters
Migration can reduce data-center dependency, but it may preserve the same workflow friction, release bottlenecks, data gaps, and support burden. Modernization should improve how the capability works, not only where it runs.
- • Use migration for stability, infrastructure risk reduction, or near-term hosting constraints.
- • Use modernization when workflow, integration, deployment, data, security, or user experience must change.
- • Do not promise modernization outcomes from a migration-only plan.
Executive test
Ask what will be better after the work is complete: cost, resilience, speed, workflow quality, data access, AI readiness, user experience, or operating control. If the answer is vague, the program needs clearer scope.
